Track No. 02 on our debut album, “Edge of the World,” is called “Control.” The started as an experiment—my ode to the childlike, shadowy spirit expressed by one of my favorite female vocalists, Chibi of The Birthday Massacre. It was truly an accident that the song has taken off like it has—almost taking on a life of its own. And oh so appropriate that it has….
"For me, the song couldn’t be more personal. It’s based on a tragedy that happened a few years ago. After one of my closest friends decided to take his life, I felt utterly helpless. And so did those around him. It was my first real encounter with grief. This song is my attempt to grapple with those feelings. For those of us who were his chosen family, we couldn’t help but blame ourselves. In a way, the song is also an apology. It is my hope that 'Control' gives strength to those of you who have also lost someone, or who are fighting with dark thoughts. You are not alone. Some things are out of our control, and that’s OK. Just don’t give up hope. Keep fighting." //
– Leslie Irene Benson, vocalist + lyricist, The Sweetest Condition
